Message from the Director
Welcome to the Norwich University School of Graduate Studies Teaching & Learning Certificate program. The program is designed for new teachers and for those who have some experience but who want to deepen their knowledge and hone their skills. It's also designed for people who want to become teachers. The two seminars address crucial knowledge and skills needed to be an effective teacher in face-to-face (F2F), hybrid and online environments. Many of the skills you will learn will be useful in a range of professional settings.
The program is designed around a couple of very important principles. One, each seminar is structured to bring in your experience (and what you already know), add to your knowledge base, provide opportunities for you to grapple with important issues about teaching and learning, and complete assignments that will prepare you for teaching. Two, people come into this program with different levels of teaching experience, and many years of experience in being a student. Given this wealth of experience, it's important to understand that we all learn from each other. We are all teachers and learners. If you engage actively not only with the instructor but with each other it helps to create a dynamic learning environment.
It's likely that most of you will think long and hard before committing yourself to this certificate program. Your commitment will be the first key to your success. Other keys to success include asking questions and being proactive, making the curriculum and assignments work for you, learning to manage your time, setting small goals and achieving them, and getting support and encouragement from instructors, your cohort members and other people in your life. Visualize yourself gaining confidence in your skills as a teacher. Visualize interacting with your students in ways that will stimulate their curiosity, engage their intellect, and have a long-lasting and positive impact on their lives. Visualize yourself becoming the teacher you've always wanted to be.
A final thought to keep in mind is that, if you are a good teacher, you will continue to learn about teaching and learning for the rest of your life. If that thought is exciting to you, this is an opportunity you may wish to pursue.
Sincerely,

Linda Lucas, PhD
