Message from the Director:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that government employment is expected to increase by 10 percent between 2004 and 2014. Increased opportunities in government employment will be fueled by an ongoing shift of responsibilities from the federal to state and local governments. This shifting of responsibilities calls for new skills as governmental and non-governmental institutions provide increasingly overlapping services, involving new models of cooperation.

In response to these demands, Norwich University has developed a Master of Public Administration (MPA) program to provide you with the tools needed to excel in leadership positions in public, private, and nonprofit organizations. The MPA is a professional degree designed to help current and future public service professionals develop the skills and techniques required to implement policies, projects, and programs that seek to resolve important societal problems.

You will complete and apply coursework focusing on organizational management concepts and practices, decision-making processes, conflict management, ethical and legal issues, information management and security, human resources, and budgeting and financial processes. You will also study the process of policy and program formulation, implementation, evaluation, and revision. While developing core skills, and the theoretical basis for action, you will be expected to take your studies beyond the classroom as you apply new knowledge to real-world issues faced in the workplace. In short, the Norwich MPA seeks to provide you with the education, training, and skills required to be an effective public manager in a demanding and evolving system.

Norwich University trains highly qualified students for careers in governmental services and related areas. While students with varying levels of experience are welcome, one of our greatest strengths is the level of expertise and experience brought by students presently serving the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. These professionals recognize that the Norwich University MPA is an ideal way to enhance their background and skills. The program has been designed to provide a fundamental grounding in the basic elements of public administration while permitting sufficient flexibility for students to pursue special interests and skills.

Norwich University believes that an organization's legacy is defined by the organization's contribution to society, and we are proud of our tradition of service, that began in 1819. Among other accomplishments, Norwich University is known for a tradition of quality, innovation, and excellence in education. Norwich University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. Norwich also has decades of experience delivering distance education to adult learners.

For professionals who wish to take advantage of new opportunities arising in the field of public administration, Norwich University offers everything necessary – convenience, innovative interactive classrooms, a manageable pace, and powerful and long-lasting relationships. Learn with a carefully chosen faculty and a group of students selected with the expectation of making strong contributions to the field. The future holds the promise of personal achievement and career fulfillment.
