History - The Roots of our Legacy
 In 1819, Cpt. Alden Partridge founded the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy in Norwich, Vermont. The name was later changed to Norwich University. The institution moved to Northfield, Vermont in 1839.
The first private engineering school in the country, the first private military academy in the country, the birthplace of the American ROTC program, the first military academy to accept women (two years before the others), and one of the first military academies to invite traditional students to live and study with the Cadets; Norwich has thrust itself ahead of other universities on many occasions. Always the leader, Norwich is now reaching out to its constituency with online distance education.
 Norwich University celebrated the graduation of the University's first class of MBA students, Norwich's first Online Graduate Program, on Friday, August 8, 2003. Sixty-three students from the United States, Canada and France received their master's degree at the event.
