Beyond Buildings - The Spirit of Norwich
Norwich University's undergraduate institution boasts one of the most interesting dynamics of any campus in the country. Combined on one campus is a traditional residential undergraduate population of students as well as the prestigious Norwich University Corps of Cadets. Norwich is the oldest private military college in the nation. Pomp and circumstance prevail and provide an upbeat atmosphere for all constituents, both civilian and military alike.
Kreitzberg Arena, one of the finest facilities in all of Division III sports, is the home of the Norwich University Hockey Cadets, NCAA National Champions in 2003. Winter is long in Vermont. But no one minds during hockey season.
Football has a long tradition at Norwich. The mixed presence of Corps and traditional students provides an atmosphere found nowhere else, with the possible exception of Texas A&M. Touchdowns are celebrated with push-ups and cannon volleys, players take the field into a funnel of Cadet Rooks, cheering and hooting for their team. Sabine Field is the place to be on October Saturday afternoons.
What would Vermont be without a Winter Carnival? The Norwich Winter Carnival provides a chance for all student groups to challenge each other in the Annual Snow Sculpture Contest.
